“A student is considered gifted when she/he possesses demonstrated or potential abilities that give evidence of exceptionally high capability with respect to intellect, creativity, or the skills associated with specific disciplines. Students who are gifted often demonstrate outstanding abilities in more than one area. They may demonstrate extraordinary intensity of focus in their particular areas of talent or interest. However, they may also have accompanying disabilities and should not be expected to have strengths in all areas of functioning.”

In the Delta School District, students who are identified as Gifted are supported via their Individual Education Plans.
Each school has a Gifted Support Teacher who is responsible for coordinating IEPs for Gifted students, providing enrichment in school as appropriate and helping to coordinate student access to District Stretch programs.
Support within school settings is increasingly provided through the differentiation of instruction within regular classroom settings where students are provided with opportunities to pursue passions and ‘go deeper’ with their learning. As well, in-school supports and services can range from informal enrichment opportunities and compacting of curriculum to enrollment in challenge courses, grade acceleration and self-directed studies depending upon the student’s age and learner profile.
Outside of the school, the Delta School District offers a range of formal enrichment opportunities in the form of Stretch programs. The following Stretch programs are available for nominated and selected students.
- MathStretch – Grades 5–7
- WriteStretch – Grades 2–12
- ArtStretch – Grades 5–7
- ScienceStretch – Grades 5–10
Stretch programs provide students from throughout the District with opportunities to come together intermittently throughout the year to further pursue their passions for Math, Writing, Art and Science.
