Over fifty countries around the world use French as their language of communication! Second Language studies at North Delta are designed to prepare students for an increasingly competitive global marketplace. The focus is on practical every day vocabulary and an interactive approach is used in the classroom. There is an emphasis in our classes on the four aspects of language learning: Reading, Writing, Listening, and speaking. Culture forms an important part of every unit in the Modern Languages classroom And At North Delta Secondary, students are citizens of the world community. As such, a positive attitude towards Diversity is encouraged and celebrated.

All Grade 8 students must take French 8
This is an introductory course in French. Thematic units will be used and will focus largely on everyday situations. A variety of activities, many of which center on culture, will encourage the students to engage in meaningful learning. Oral and written assessments, assignments and projects account for 80%. The final exam is worth 20%. This course will prepare students for French 9.

This course further develops the skills acquired in French 8. This program is delivered with a communicative approach using themed units and cultural components. Varied activities will help students attain the ability to progress in the language skills of reading, writing, speaking and listening. By the end of the course students should be able to communicate about Past, and present activities as they relate to specific topics. This course prepares students for French 10.

This is an interactive language class where students learn about French culture around the world. The language is learned through fun-filled activities on themes that are relevant and useful. They will learn to communicate about past, present and future activities. They further enhance their speaking and writing abilities by using various pronouns. This course is a pre-requisite for French 11.

Through a variety of communicative activities students will continue to expand their vocabulary and refine their ability to talk and write about past events as well as expressing their opinions about more abstract and hypothetical ideas. The themes are relevant and practical in everyday life. This course will prepare students for French 12. Assessment will be both oral and written: 80% tests, quizzes, projects, assignments.

This course emphasizes building on structures and vocabulary learned in grades 8-11. Oral and written communication is of primary importance - new grammar and vocabulary serve mainly to make communication clearer and more interesting. Class activities include ongoing quizzes or tests, short compositions, both oral and aural work, varied reading comprehension, grammar as it relates to composition/oral expression.

Beginning Spanish 11 - Level 1

This is an introductory level Spanish course open to Grade 10, 11 or 12 students who have never studied Spanish OR have had only Spanish 9. Students who intend to use Spanish as their language requirement for graduation or university entrance must be highly motivated and of good academic standing. The course is presented at a fast pace. The focus begins with oral skills and progresses increasingly towards reading comprehension and written expression. Culture is also a major component of the course. Students who choose to take Spanish must be willing to participate energetically in the many fun-filled activities and must be willing to commit considerable time to home study as opportunities to use the language in our community are negligible.

This is an intermediate level Spanish course open to students in Grade 11 and 12, who have successfully completed Spanish 10 or Beginners Spanish 11. Those students who intend to use Spanish as a requirement for graduation or university entrance must be motivated, disciplined and prepared to work at a fast pace as they must complete two years of study in one. Through a variety of communicative activities and projects, students will continue to expand their vocabulary and refine their ability to talk and write about past events as well as express their opinions about more abstract and hypothetical ideas. The themes are relevant and practical in everyday life. Students will be exposed to a variety of Hispanic cultures. Note: Students who complete this course will meet the Grade 11 language requirement for university entrance.

This is an advanced level Spanish course open to students in Grade 11 and 12 who have successfully completed two years of intensive study in Spanish. The course will focus on vocabulary building, reading comprehension and composition writing. The aim will be to perfect linguistic skills so that they will be able to communicate with native speakers of Spanish and cope in a Spanish environment.

Spanish 11 with at least a 60% average.
