Dear Families,

We are reaching out today following the heartbreaking event and tragic loss of life that occurred in Tumbler Ridge yesterday. On behalf of the Delta School District, we extend our deepest condolences to the families, friends, and loved ones affected. Our hearts are with the entire Tumbler Ridge community as they navigate this time of unimaginable grief.

We recognize that news of such a tragedy can be deeply upsetting for all of us. Children and youth may react in many ways, and a wide range of emotions is normal. These feelings may surface immediately or over time, and each child will process them differently. Please know that we are here to support your child(ren). We encourage you to reach out to your school administrator or counsellor if you have concerns or feel your child may need extra care.

As parents and caregivers, you may also be looking for resources to help guide conversations at home. The following supports may be helpful as you assist your child in understanding and coping with yesterday’s event:

  • Click here for Parent Guidelines for Helping Youth After the Recent Shooting from the National Child Traumatic Stress Network
  • Click here for a list of resources and helpful websites available to families

We also want to reassure you that student safety continues to be our highest priority. Our schools regularly practice emergency procedures—including earthquake, fire, lockdown, and hold‑and‑secure drills—to ensure that staff and students know how to respond in a variety of situations. If you would like to learn more about the district’s emergency preparedness and response protocols, please visit https://www.deltasd.bc.ca/district/delta-schools-emergency-procedures/

Please take care, and do not hesitate to reach out if your family needs support.

Doug Sheppard
