The Delta Secondary construction program offers hands-on, project-based learning to students.

“It’s not like every kid is building their little wood box or their cabinet. They’re actually all working together on a project that’s going to be seen to completion at a homeowner’s house,” explained instructor Casey Mynott.

Students are currently working on a pair of sheds. One will stay in Ladner while the other will be going to Saltspring Island.

Working with a homeowner is an interesting part of the program, Mynott said.

It shows students, within the confines of a school program, what a real jobsite looks like and gives them an idea how to interact with homeowners and work on people skills, he explained.

“The scope of the program is to make sure kids get the experience of what residential house construction is like,” he said.

Mynott was also excited to note the program is working with Penfolds, which is providing students a chance to work with new rubber roofing shingles which have been recycled from used tires.

Mynott said anyone interested in working with the program to have a shed built can contact Delta Secondary at 604-946-4194 and ask for him. He noted homeowners cover the cost of the materials.
