Delta Secondary’s Careers Week: Inspiring Students to Dream Big

Category: District

Delta Secondary School (DSS) recently hosted Careers Week from November 26 to 29 to help students explore career opportunities, connect with professionals, and start thinking about their futures. With a variety of activities and guest speakers, the week was a chance to spark curiosity and inspire confidence in every student at DSS. An email was sent to families prior to the week, providing an opportunity for them to discuss the events and their outcomes with their children.

What Happened During Careers Week?

Students had the opportunity to attend guest speaker presentations during flex sessions through the week. These sessions featured professionals from a broad range of industries who shared insights about their careers. Many of the speakers were parents from the DSS community.

Highlights included:

  • Skilled Trades
  • A hands-on day with a heavy machinery simulator from the BC Roadbuilders Roadshow
  • Careers in healthcare, including doctors, nurses, and midwives
  • Opportunities in business, such as entrepreneurship, wealth management, and accounting
  • Public service roles like law enforcement, firefighting, and counseling
  • Creative fields like acting/directing
  • Specialized industries like horticulture and aviation
  • An exclusive session for Grade 9 students, focusing on volunteering and the Careers 9 online coursework such as goal setting

With so many options, students had the chance to explore careers they were already passionate about or discover new possibilities they hadn’t considered before.

Teachers at the Heart of Careers Week

Teachers played a central role in making Careers Week a success, encouraging and inspiring students to participate. Additionally, school staff participated by:

  1. Sharing Personal Career Journeys
All staff were asked to display and discuss their Career Profile, including the administrators, clerical and EA’s.  These profiles shared fun details about their favorite subjects, educational journeys, and career advice, giving students insight into their lives and encouraging open thinking about the future.
  2. Highlighting Subject-Specific Careers
During their Flex sessions, teachers spotlighted careers related to their subject areas. From in-demand professions to alternatives that didn’t require post-secondary education, these discussions helped students understand the practical applications of what they were learning.

 Why Careers Week Was Important

Careers Week was more than just a series of events as it gave students a chance to dream big and learn about the steps they could take to achieve their goals. Through guest speaker presentations, teacher guidance, and personal connections, students were able to:

  • Explore a variety of career paths
  • Gain insight into the skills and education required for different professions
  • Feel inspired to take the first steps toward their future goals or take steps to learn more about future possibilities.

Delta Secondary’s Careers Week opened doors to exciting possibilities and helped students see the incredible potential in their futures. It was a week to remember, filled with inspiration and opportunity.

CLE students created and displayed posters to advertise different trades and local volunteer opportunities:
