Almost 50 students from schools across North Delta as well as Richmond, Surrey, and Vancouver attended the Delview Park Clean Up Competition on Earth Day on Monday, April 22.  The event, which was organized by the Delview Leos Club, resulted in 20 bags of garbage being collected.

15 teams of between 1 and 5 people were given garbage tongs, gloves and bags. They cleaned up Delview Park, 116th Street and 90th Avenue, filling 20 bags of garbage. Celine Mohamed and Melanie Chen, who collected three bags of garbage, received a Spring Gift Basket filled with an assortment of gardening tools and supplies, spring decorations, picnic items and goodies for collecting the most garbage.

“This was the second year of the Clean Up Competition,” said Joshua Thoreson, Grade 10 student and Secretary of the Delview Leos Club. “We were thrilled to have even more people show up to help clean up litter from our community than last year.”

The Delview Leos Club is a youth-run, youth-organized club, and was only founded last year. They are a youth branch of Lions International, a worldwide non-profit service organization. One of their core values is making a positive change in their school and wider community as well as protecting the environment.
