Grade 4 Hellings Student Helps BC’s Flood Victims

Category: District

Grade 4 Hellings Elementary student Akshaya certainly ended the year on a high note! With help from her family, she organized a fundraiser to help BC residents impacted by the recent floods.

Akshaya and her family baked fruit cakes and created handmade holiday ornaments to sell to family and friends for a minimum donation of $20, with the final 10 cakes sold on the North Delta Community Corner Facebook group. Throughout December, they braved the elements and went out in all weathers to sell and deliver the cakes and ornaments.

They raised their fundraising goal of $1,000 and decided to donate the money to the West Coast Pilot Club to help with the fuel costs to get supplies to people in need. We encourage you to watch this short video created by Akshaya and her family which documents their fundraiser.

Akshaya ends her video by saying “This is a great way to end a year and start a new year!” We couldn’t agree more. Well done Akshaya – we are so proud of you. What a great example of kindness, compassion, hard work and community citizenship!
