Are you passionate about shaping the future? Do you believe in the power of early learning? If so, a career as an Early Childhood Educator (ECE) might be your calling—and Delta Continuing Education has the programs for you!
“The first five years of a child’s life are so important, which makes the role of an Early Childhood Educator vital,” says Jun, a proud graduate of Delta’s ECE program. “Being an ECE is not only rewarding—it has a lasting, positive impact on the children who are our future.”
Why Choose Delta Continuing Education?
Delta Continuing Education has been a trusted leader in early childhood education since 1969. Their programs are based on current research and best practices, and blend theory with hands-on experience, preparing students to become thoughtful, responsive, and reflective educators.
“Our curriculum is grounded in the BC Early Learning Framework and emphasizes inquiry-based learning,” explains Lisa Nicholson, ECE Program Coordinator and Instructor, Delta Continuing Education. “We challenge our students to think and reflect deeply, which helps them grow into educators who truly understand the needs of young children.”
Programs That Fit Your Life
Delta offers the following programs:
- Basic ECE Certificate – Focuses on children aged 3–5. Students explore the foundations of early childhood education, child growth and development, health and nutrition, learning through play, responding to children’s interests in planning curriculum experiences, interpersonal skills and the importance of working with families, schools and the wider community.
- Post-Basic ECE Certificate – Once they have completed the Basic ECE Certificate, students can earn certificates in Infant and Toddler Education or Special Needs Education. Completing both specializations along with the Basic Certificate leads to a Diploma in Early Childhood Education.
All courses are offered part-time (evenings and Saturdays), making it easier to balance work, family, and study.
Learning That Comes to Life
Students don’t just learn in the classroom—they apply their knowledge and gain practical experience through observation assignments and practicum placements in child care.
“The theory part of the course was amazing,” says Sinder, a graduate of the program. “It blew my mind to see what I was learning unfold in front of me. There is so much depth to Delta’s ECE program. It taught us to see the whole child and give them the time and space to express what they feel or need in that moment. We really try to understand what is going on for the child. I’m not sure all ECE programs devote enough time to that.”
“I think the biggest impact came from the instructors. They are amazing – warm, passionate and they have so much current classroom experience,” adds Jun. “The instructors helped us to connect with each other, to feel comfortable, and to open our hearts. They showed great care and patience, but also held us to high standards because they know this is so important for the children in our care, and the ECE profession overall.”
Real Stories, Real Impact
“Be ready for the program—it’s a commitment,” says current student Jooeun. “There’s a lot of reading, research, and reflection. Most students work full time and study, so there is a lot to juggle. But it’s so worth it. I had so many ‘aha’ moments. Don’t be surprised if your philosophy of early learning completely changes. For anyone thinking about applying for the program, don’t wait—just do it!”
“My average day starts with setting up materials for the children to engage with—play dough, loose parts, and books that match the children’s interests,” shares Alison, a current student. “I’m also preparing myself so that I can be present with the children. I remind myself that I’m only with them for a short amount of time and they deserve to have my full focus and attention. The most rewarding part of my role is the connections I make, not only with the children in my care, but with their families.”
Practicum as Partnership
“The field of early childhood education continues to change, so we also need to evolve,” says Danielle, a mentor and Bright Eyes Academy Child Care Centre Manager (Holly location) who works closely with Delta’s practicum students. “We value the experience of working alongside Delta students. Their curiosity and fresh perspectives inspire our educators and deepen our own practice and reflective thinking. It becomes this beautiful full circle of learning.”
“When practicum students come to us, we treat them as part of our community. We meet with them a week or two before their placement to start developing a relationship,” continues Danielle. “They’re not just learning from us—we’re learning from them. The emerging curriculum Delta teaches is inclusive and supports children in becoming their authentic selves.”
Tara, mentor and Child Care Centre Manager at Bright Eyes Academy (Brooke location), echoes this sentiment:
“I appreciate seeing the evolution of the program. What’s being taught reflects current best practices. Our role as mentors is to support students through those practices and challenge their thinking to bring out the best of each student to help them grow. Building relationships and connections are the most important skills you need when working with children to enable them to feel seen, heard and understood. These are the core values of both Delta’s ECE program and our approach at the Bright Eyes Academy’.”
Collaboration That Lasts
Delta’s long-standing partnerships with local childcare centres have created a strong, supportive network for students and educators alike.
“We’ve had a beautiful working relationship with Delta’s instructors for years, including the opportunity to participate in a community of practice with them,” Tara adds. “There’s a real sense of collaboration for how we can work together to support and mentor students in the program. It will always be a ‘yes’ for us to host practicum students from Delta!”
Rosie, another mentor and daycare centre leader, highlights the mutual benefit:
“Delta students bring a fresh set of eyes. We encourage them to stay curious and ask questions as their perspective can sometimes help us see things in new ways. The program instructors build a culture of openness and inclusion—there’s no shame in making mistakes or thinking differently. That approach is so important – students need to have a safe space to be able to learn and grow.”
Delta’s instructors are more than educators—they’re mentors, guides, and champions of growth.
“I love seeing students’ eyes light up when they understand something, especially when they are practising their skills during their practicum. It’s a joy to watch people learn new things and step into their power,” says Nicky, an instructor in Delta’s ECE program.
“Curiosity is key—about themselves, their own skillset, about children and families. I think students who come in with the desire to lean into new ideas, or even things that make us feel a little uncomfortable, do very well in our program. As instructors, we constantly wrestle with what kind of foundation we are giving our students so that when they step into a classroom, they are able to excel. One of our greatest strengths is that our instructors are so in touch with what is currently happening in the field, and what students need to be successful in the classroom.”
“Delta’s ECE program is rooted in intentional, thoughtful practice,” says Lauren, another Delta instructor. “We want students to walk away from the program understanding the profound impact early educators have on society. This isn’t just about caring for children until their parents return. Our program really honours the role of an educator and focuses on the power of reflection and purposeful education for children. Being an ECE is a lot of work, but it’s so rewarding and powerful. Delta’s program has high standards that will ultimately lead students to meaningful work. If you have a passion, joy and drive that underlies what we do with children, it will result in a great education for the children in your care, the value and impact of which is lifechanging.”
Delta’s ECE graduates are in high demand.
“Roughly 90% of our students find employment before they even graduate,” says Lisa Nicholson, ECE Program Coordinator and Instructor. “There’s a growing need for qualified Early Childhood Educators in licensed childcare facilities across the province.”
“We believe everyone—our students and the children in their care—learns best when they feel safe and supported. Our goal is to nurture curiosity, creativity, and diverse perspectives. If you’re ready to embark on a meaningful career that shapes young lives and strengthens communities, we’d love to hear from you.”
“I feel like the training made me a different person. The program helped me know how best to speak and connect with children. I listen to children more with my whole heart now, and that really helps me in my work,” concluded Jooeun, student.
