Summary of the Budget Process

All school districts in B.C. are required by law to pass a balanced budget. The budget process takes place over several months:

JANUARY: The District’s finance team prepares a preliminary budget based on District budget guidelines, enrolment changes, contractual obligations and other information known to impact the District in the upcoming budget year.

FEBRUARY/MARCH: The District Budget Committee evaluates the preliminary budget and any emerging issues. The District holds a budget consultation meeting to enable the public and the District’s stakeholder groups to provide input on their priorities. Trustees update their budget priorities to guide the budget committee as it begins to consider budget balancing options. Budget information is further refined after the Ministry of Education releases funding allocations for the next school year.

APRIL/MAY: The Delta School District presents a draft preliminary budget for the Delta Board of Education to consider. The district holds a Special Board meeting to enable the public and the District’s stakeholder groups to provide input on the draft budget. Revisions are considered and the budget may change as the Board directs.

BEFORE JUNE 30: The Board will adopt a balanced budget for the upcoming school year.

As the school year progresses, the budget is monitored and adjusted, and an amended budget is passed by the Board at the end of February. The process then begins again to establish the budget for the following school year.
