Recently, Victoria Liu and Julianne Yu, students at Seaquam Secondary and Burnsview Secondary respectively, organized Music in the Neighbourhood, a concert to raise funds for Balding for Dollars Charity, which works in partnership with the BC Children’s Hospital to help kids fight cancer.
The concert was held on June 4 at the North Delta Centre for the Arts. This was the third concert Victoria and Julianne have organized with the assistance of their parents, following successful concerts in September and December last year.
Approximately 100 people attended the June 4 concert, which raised more than $2,400. Through the three concerts, the students have now raised more than $5,000 for the charity.
“For the last three years, social events such as this have been put on hold due to the pandemic. As a result, communities have become disconnected and isolated, which is far from what a true community should be,” said Victoria. “We hope our events have helped to reignite this communal spirit while at the same time supporting a great cause. Not only have the performers had a chance to connect with youth playing instruments other than their own, but the audience has been immersed in a space with a variety of musical talents and sounds.”
“Music in the Neighbourhood has also given local youth a platform to perform and showcase their hard work in a real stage setting,” said Julianne. “These concerts have been a wonderful opportunity for the community and kids alike after the past three years where we’ve all missed out on the opportunity to enjoy live events.”
“We are so proud of Victoria and Julianne,” said Vlad Nikic, Vice Principal, Seaquam Secondary. “They have put so much effort into organizing these concerts. It’s great to see their success in bringing the community together for such a great cause.”
