Last September, Delta Cops for Cancer Cyclists visited Sunshine Hills and generated an enormous amount of excitement and support for their cause, but little did they know how committed and the students were to helping other kids with Cancer in BC.
“At our assembly in September we challenged students to feel thankful for their own good health and to find a place in their hearts to help kids with cancer have a better life by fundraising for Cops for Cancer,” says Ahmed, a grade-seven student and member of the Sunshine Hills WE Committee (SHWC).
The SHWC, which is comprised of 63 grade six and seven students, took up the challenge in a big way—creating school-wide “read-a-thons”, bake sales, a candy jar challenge, and a raffle for a Delta Police ride-along.
Five months later, students at Sunshine Hills invited Delta Cops for Cancer and the Canadian Cancer Society (Camp Good Times) back to the school for an exciting announcement. Through their efforts the school raised an impressive $8000 dollars for the cause.
Special guest speaker at the assembly Nolan McLeod, a grade 12 students at SDSS, spoke with students about being a childhood cancer survivor and how Camp Good Times was an integral part of his journey. Nolan was diagnosed with Leukemia in grade 7 and spent the next 3 and-a-half years undergoing treatment, and winning his battle against cancer. Camp Good Times played an important role in his recovery.
Today, Nolan now works hard to help kids who are undergoing cancer treatments. Last September he was named the BC ambassador for the 2016 Sears National Kids Cancer Ride.
Receiving the cheque at the assembly was DPD Constable Sarah Swallow and Rachelle Perkins, Coordinator of the Cops for Cancer Tour for the Canadian caner Society.
Constable Swallow spoke with the students and congratulated them on their remarkable efforts.
“You all have accomplished something really wonderful. In September, when we first visited your school, I had no idea how committed you were to helping kids who are battling cancer. $8000 is lot of money, and you all should be very proud. With this donation you guys are sending six kids to Camp Good Times! That is so awesome.”
