STUDENT TRANSPORTATION
Preamble
The Delta School District is dedicated to the promotion of inclusive, equitable educational experiences for all students. The Delta School District recognizes the importance of equitable access to schools and the role that transportation provisions play in this.
As per the Special Ed Manual (H.18: Transportation), local school districts set student transportation policy and are advised to develop procedures related to transportation of students with disabilities. This document provides eligibility criteria for students to be considered for District Funded transportation.
Procedures
1. Transportation Approval Process
1.1 Starting in May of each school year, Learning Services-Inclusive Learning reaches out to schools to confirm if bussing is required for the following school year. Program Teachers fill in Bus Transportation Request forms and return them to Inclusive Learning for review and approval.
1.2 Approval for bussing is confirmed by Learning Services-Inclusive Learning prior to the end of June and schools in turn notify families.
1.3 Requests and changes may also come in throughout the school year, however, even if the new student meets criteria for eligibility (see criteria below) the student may not be guaranteed bussing after school start-up. On a case-by-case basis, alternative transportation may be offered when bussing is not an option.
1. Eligibility Criteria
A Delta School District Student may be considered for District funded transportation when:
Caregivers are not capable of transporting the student to and or/from school and, at least one of the following criteria can be clearly demonstrated:
2.1 Despite being within reasonable capacity for most same-age peers, the student is not physically able to cycle/walk/travel the distance from their place of residence and back again. The condition responsible for this impairment must not be temporary in nature (i.e. a broken leg).
2.2 Despite being within reasonable capacity for most same-age peers, the student is not cognitively able to safely and independently navigate themselves from their place of residence to school and back again.
2.3 The student was placed by the district in a program of support that is outside of the family’s catchment area school and placement is not a result of disciplinary action.
*Note: The vast majority of student transportation will be provided through the bussing company contracted by the Delta School District. However, there may be unique circumstances where other arrangements are required.
