A Message from Delta School Board Chairperson, Val Windsor
World Teachers’ Day is held annually on October 5th to celebrate all teachers around the globe. It commemorates the anniversary of the adoption of the 1966 ILO/UNESCO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers, which sets out the rights and responsibilities of teachers, and standards for their initial preparation and further education, recruitment, employment, and teaching and learning conditions. World Teachers’ Day has been celebrated since 1994.
The theme of this year’s World Teachers’ Day is “Valuing teacher voices: towards a new social contract for education” underscoring the urgency of calling for and attending to teachers’ voices to address their challenges but, most importantly, to acknowledge and benefit from the expert knowledge and input that they bring to education.
“We know that teachers play a pivotal role in shaping the future by nurturing thriving, future-ready learners. It is important that we address the systemic challenges teachers face and hear and value their voices when making decisions that affect their role in education. This type of collaborative approach will support teachers’ professional status and help make the profession more attractive and sustainable,” said Val Windsor, Chair, Delta Board of Education. “On behalf of the Board of Trustees, thank you to all staff within our district – educators, support staff, school and district administrators, CUPE 1091 and DTA members – for your outstanding hard work and unwavering commitment to supporting Delta students.”
On October 5, and every other day for that matter, my hope is that you will all take a moment to express your gratitude to our teachers, school and district administrators, and all other staff.
Thank you
A Message from Delta School District Superintendent, Doug Sheppard
I would like to add to Val’s comments and share some of my thoughts on why World Teachers’ Day is important to Delta School District.
Achieving our Vision for 2030 of being an innovative, inclusive community where all learners belong and everyone soars is wholly dependent on being able to build positive connections between staff and learners. Integrating staff perspectives into educational policies and practices and fostering a supportive environment for staff professional learning and growth will strengthen the ability to foster those powerful connections with students and provide the best learning environment for all to flourish.
Please join me in taking a moment on October 5 to thank everyone who has chosen to follow a career in education, and for focusing on the Delta School District’s Vision for 2030.
