From April 22 – 24, students at Jarvis Elementary participated in the Stick to School P.E. Program, an initiative organized by the Vancouver Warriors and British Columbia Lacrosse Association (BCLA), after the school’s P.E. teacher Sarah Bant reached out to see if it was possible to introduce students to lacrosse.
This free program gives students the chance to learn more about lacrosse, a game deeply rooted in Indigenous culture, and to try their hand at the sport. Coach Alex, a former collegiate lacrosse player, spent three days at Jarvis teaching P.E. classes in collaboration with the school’s teachers.
“Alex brought sticks and balls to the school and taught the students how to pick up, carry, pass and shoot the ball,” said Ms. Bant. “For some of the students, this was their first opportunity to try lacrosse. They all seemed to enjoy the experience! Many thanks to the Vancouver Warriors and British Columbia Lacrosse Association for this great opportunity.”
The Stick to School P.E. Program is free for schools, with costs covered by the BCLA, Canucks for Kids Fund and Canadian Tire’s Jumpstart. Lacrosse is Canada’s national summer sport. It offers a unique blend of athleticism, strategy and camaraderie that aligns perfectly with BC’s education system’s commitment to holistic education.
