Spring Kayak Trip A Resounding Success

Category: DistrictSchool

Earlier this month, several Delview Secondary Students in the Take A Hike Program embarked on a Spring Kayaking trip. They spent one night at Montague Harbour on Galiano Island, then paddled to Wallace Island and spent two nights at Chivers Point where they camped out in the backcountry. The paddle took over 5 hours each way!

“We had a sea lion join us for about an hour of our paddle back to Galiano and also saw a colony of seals, otters, dolphins, martens, lots of eagles, and some humpback whales on our ferry back to Tsawwassen!” said Tom Cianfrini, Coordinator/Teacher, Delview Secondary. “Bioluminescence was also out in full form and everyone was amazed, playing in the water at night and seeing it light up.”

During the trip, students learned about navigation, weather, tides and the different geological formations they saw along the way and discussed the different plants and wildlife they encountered. Each day, students were given solo time to gather their thoughts and complete a journal question.
