March 21 is World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD), a global awareness day which has been officially observed by the United Nations since 2012. The date for WDSD being the 21st day of the 3rd month, was selected to signify the uniqueness of the triplication (trisomy) of the 21st chromosome which causes Down syndrome.
On March 21, people are encouraged to wear socks that will get them noticed. They might be mismatched socks or your most colourful socks! The idea is to start a conversation, so when people ask you about your socks you can tell them, “I’m wearing them to raise awareness of Down syndrome”.
This year, as in many previous years, Pinewood Elementary students Maxx, Will and Koll have helped to educate their local school community about Down syndrome.
Prior to Spring Break, with the support of Mr. Clay, Ms. Ke and Mr. Henderson, they created a video that was shared in all classes to help raise awareness of Down syndrome, and they also personally delivered a pair of colourful socks to each class for a draw. Great work Maxx, Will and Koll!
