Youth Week 2025 Kicked Off with the 3rd Annual Amazing Race!

Category: District

On April 29th, more than 200 enthusiastic Delta students participated in the 3rd annual Amazing Race to launch Youth Week 2025. Grade 7 students teamed up with secondary students from their future high schools and a Child and Youth Care Worker (CYCW) to race to various “pit stops” across the city.

At each stop, teams engaged with local community agencies, learning about the essential services and supports available to youth in our area. This exciting and interactive event helps ease the transition to high school by fostering meaningful connections and building awareness of the many valuable resources available to support young people in Delta.

“The Amazing Race continues to be an event that bridges high school and elementary students in a very encouraging, supportive and fun environment,” said Jessica Udy, South Delta Child and Youth Care Worker. “It allows for conversations to happen naturally and builds up elementary students’ confidence in knowing friendly faces await them in high school.”

Feedback from parents and students was overwhelmingly positive:

“I liked learning about all the places in Delta.” – Delta student

“High school doesn’t seem scary anymore, the high school students with our team were so nice!” – Delta student

“I just wanted to reach out and share what a wonderful time my daughter had at the Ladner Amazing Race! She came home absolutely buzzing with excitement—telling us all about the people she met, the places she visited, the food she enjoyed, and the fun items she got to bring home. As she was recounting her day, I realized something meaningful: many of the “stops” she visited were local organizations that she—or someone she knows—might need one day. These are places our family might not have thought to introduce her to, or explain the important roles they play in our community. That kind of exposure is invaluable. Feeling connected to your community is so important, and I’m incredibly grateful that she had the opportunity to take part in such a thoughtful and impactful event. Thank you so much for organizing this.”  – Ladner parent

A special thank you to the amazing Amazing Race organizing committee led by Delta School District’s Child and Youth Care Worker Missy Thornton.

The Amazing Race is a community event supported by Delta’s Child and Youth Committee (CYC). It is one of many free events for youth provided by the City of Delta during BC Youth Week (May 1 – 7, 2025). Other programs and activities offered this year included escape rooms, movie nights, video game nights, yoga, drop-in sports and painting sessions.
